Bananas and Cakes, Yummy!

Now I can breathe! I'm finally finished!  I've been cleaning up and putting away everything related to the project in my Sneak Peek and the Wordless Thursday posts.  Those of you who thought my "challenging quilt" hint meant it was for a quilt challenge project were right!  I had to use each of the three fabrics you saw in the Sneak Peek post in this quilt.  I hope you don't mind if I wait until the weekend of the quilt show to post a picture of the project!  It was really a challenge for me and I used some different techniques.  Isn't that the point of a challenge quilt, to make you quilt outside the box just a little, or maybe even a lot?

Go Bananas!

My bananas arrived yesterday!  Remember when I went bananas with my George Schnibble? Ever since, I have been looking for the perfect backing fabric with bananas on it and I found it in a quilting catalogue last week, Farmer's Market by RJR Fabrics.  After giving it some thought, I took the plunge and placed my order.  No lack of bananas here that's for sure!  The fabric is not what I would usually use for the back, but why not?  I like the back to coordinate with the front, but be a little splashier in some way.  You have to put backing fabric on your quilt so why not have some fun with it?

Candy Bar Pinwheels.....Finished!!

Since I'm on the subject of backing, here is my Candy Bar Pinwheel Quilt.  Yes again!  Now quilted and bound, and you can see the backing in this picture.   I had a different backing picked out and ready to go, but I just didn't love it.  I resigned myself to the fact that it was just going to have to do, until I saw this fabric at my LQS.  Wow!! It just jumped out at me!  I love the contrast between the smaller print on the front and the huge stars on the back.  A big difference in print size, but definitely in the same color family.  This quilt went from a way to use up some patriotic scraps, to one of my favorite quilts because of the back!

Are you concerned with what you put on the back of your quilts?  I heard someone say the other day that it doesn't matter much, because no one sees the back often anyway.  I think it does, depending on the use of the quilt.  Is it a wall hanging or a lap quilt?  That makes a difference to me in choosing the backing fabric.  The back of one won't be seen much, the back of the other may be seen a lot.  I'd love the hear your thoughts on quilt backing fabrics and how you pick them out!

Wow!  The July LePetite Prize.
It did take me a few weeks to get this posted.

Mail!  For the July LePetite prize, Carrie gave a Layer Cake to everyone who participated.  Wow!!  That is generous! When my package came there were two Layer Cakes and a pincushion kit from Primitive Gatherings!  Again wow! Especially from someone like me who is seriously lacking in the pincushion department.  I do have one......and now I have another just waiting to be made. Thank you so much, Carrie! Definitely fun mail!

Thanks for taking the time to visit!  Keep Quilting!

Love your quilt backs Michele! And your patriotic quilt is awesome! My quilt backs depend on what their purpose is like you said. And if I'm making a full size quilt, I really hate to pay full price on a quilt shop fabric for it.

I love bright colorful flannel backs and pieced backs. I have a few quilts that have more interesting pieced backs than the quilt front.

Great mail! How nice of Carry to be so generous.

Great gifts from Carrie!
Backings? I give thought to the backings of bed, baby or throw quilts, but for wall hangings I try to use up scraps from the front of the quilt. I love pieced backings and try to incorporate a label with them...something I learned from seeing the backs of
Carrie's quilts. I also try to pick something that will look good with the binding I have chosen. Your backing choices are perfect!

I hear you on the backing thing - I am super fussy about it. I think the back is just as important as the front. What can I say, I'm just like that : )

Hi, Michelle, thanks for stopping by my blog. You've got one of the happiest blogs around! Love your fabrics, especially the daring ones for the quilt backs! I tend to use up scraps and make a wacky block for the back--sometimes the back turns out too good, so it becomes a front but then I have to do another back! I look forward to following your projects and especially to see the challenge quilt.
best, nadia

Yeah for bananas and stars on the back! I like pieced backs but only sometimes are they composed of leftovers from the front. It can be two sided when you make the back special :)

What lovely prizes. I have a mixed approach to backs. On a couple of pieced backs I've used that would co-ordinate with the front and it has turned out well. Another I have just used what fitted from stash. Autumn House just has a brown fleece simply because it was a ready made fleece from a supermarket so very cheap and the right size and colour for the wallhanging. (Will share next blog post).

I do have a small felt Autumn wallhanging which has one of my fav fabrics as a backing, but it was so perfect for it that I couldn't not use it there.

Sorry I am only just catching up with yo. Daughter has had a great 1st night at uni and is loving it. Will share all the makings.
